Books and Book Reviews May 2011
I read a lot. A LOT. There’s always a book or two or three lying around my room, my bag, my cubicle, with bookmarks. I used to try and review the books here on my blog, but it got to be too many and i fell behind. Then i tried again, reviewing them in just a sentence or two, but that didn’t work either. Then i started using goodreads.com and that seems to be working. when i finish a book, i just stick the review on there, and it posts to my facebook and twitter. It’s a site that lets people be friends, and helps recommend books you may be interested in, and keep track of what you’ve read, are reading, and want to read. There’s a goodreads badge over … Read entire article »

Might as well face it, i’m addicted to books
Hi, I’m merredith and I’m a book addict. LOL no “book” is not code for anything. I really mean books. I’ve been thinking..i read A LOT. I’ve always loved reading. Even as a kid, I would sit for hours and read. And when I moved to NH in 3rd grade and began my long no friends phase, I read even MORE. They got me through life. Some people give up or drastically cut down on reading as they grow up, but not me. I just read and read. For years, I’ve belonged to a netflix/gamefly type book service (booksfree.com) and I get 6 books at a time, 2 to a mailing. That’s not enough. There’s a bookstore down the street that sells used books outside for $2 or $3 and … Read entire article »

Nerd with a Library Card
Last thursday i heard, through twitter/foursquare, that there is a library a couple blocks from my house. saturday afternoon, i walked over to check it out. i had not been to a library in years! in years you say? but you are always reading? i have a long history with libraries. going to them and bringing home a giant stack of books was one of my highlights growing up, especially once i lived in NH and had no friends. in 6th grade, my teacher ms gamage even let me have a pass that let me go to the school library down the hall ANYTIME I WANTED because she knew how bored i got in class. not that going to the library was the most exciting thing ever, but better than … Read entire article »

Augusten’s friend Christy
Excerpt from the story “GWF Seeks SAME” from Possible Side Effects by Augusten Burroughs My friend, Christy, was a pretty, tall, blond lesbian who hated the word lesbian. “It sounds so gross, Lesbian,” she said, stretching the name out, emphasizing the “z” sound of the word. “It sounds like some kind of extra female part, you know? Labia, lesbian. Like, her lesbian is infected and she has to go on heavy antibiotics.” So Christy refused to call herself a lesbian and instead described herself this way: “I’m just a girl who likes other girls.” In a way, I knew what she meant. Because for many people, the word lesbian conjures an image of a manly woman dressed in dungarees with short hair, a firm handshake, and some hair on her upper lip. “Those creatures … Read entire article »

Book to Read: Fat Land, & How it inspired me to become even healthier
Mostly, I like to read non-smart, fiction books, but once in a while, I’ll tackle an interesting looking non-fiction book. Fat Land by Greg Critser came in the mail from my book service, and I opened it up. And it was hard! I almost gave up, but I stuck with it, and I’m glad I did. Fat Land takes you through a journey of how US became so unhealthy. It was really interesting, because it tracks the political and sociological reasons that things happened. What were people doing/thinking at this time, and then this and this? Critser went through the thought processes of corporations like McDonalds, and it was so strange to learn that originally, they didn’t want to do the whole supersize thing. I also didn’t realize we had … Read entire article »
Love Walked In: A book to Check Out
I used to try and write about every book I read. I had started doing it from a young age in a journal. Way before blogs were invented! But really, there’s not enough time, with the amount of books I read..and that’s what my goodreads account is for. Last week, after a long dry spell as far as good books go, I started reading love walked in by marisa de los santos. It looked like it was either going to be a hallmark woman book, or a smart book, or even both. But it was actually really good! Right at the beginning, it grabbed me with this quote: “The truth was, i was treading water and had been for some time.. If you’re wondering why a thirty-something [31, to be exact] … Read entire article »

Kindles vs Paper Books
I’ve been hearing more and more about people getting kindles and other such reading devices. They’ve been around for a bit, but they seem to be more and more mainstream…people are always reading on the train and lately, a quarter of those people are reading kindles instead of actual books. A couple of people I know have them, but none that live close enough for me to play around with it and see it up close and personal. When I heard about it, I thought well that’s no good.. I use books as a way to relax my eyes and get off of a computer screen, and yet here’s another way to hurt them. I’ve heard that it doesn’t even use a real computer screen, it uses electronic paper. I … Read entire article »
