So-Called Straight Acting Gay/Lesbians are Not a Threat to Gayness, Quite the Opposite!
The other day a friend posted up an article (sorry I don’t have it here to link to) about how “straight acting” gay people are making gay camp dissapear. Gay camp was defined by them as most of the stereotypical gayness that you would think of when you hear the term homosexual. This article kind of annoyed me a bit and made me want to write a blog about something I’d been thinking about writing a blog about for a while. Before I begin, I want to preface what I have to say by noting that all over the world, every day, thousands or hundreds of thousands of gay men and lesbians are being teased, bullied, tortured, arrested, maimed, killed, discriminated against, etc, for being too ‘gay’ especially that … Read entire article »

It’s ok to spend quiet merri time alone..
Lately ive noticed it’s much easier for me to spend time alone. I like it actually. Maybe even six months ago, while I did crave and need alone time, I also would panic if I had to spend a nite at home alone, or a weekend day by myself. OH NO I’d think… I’m not being social enough… what will people think? Due to my constant lack of fitting-in-ness and my complete friendless state as a child, I kind of had it built into my head that it was BAD to do things by myself. That if I chose to spend a Saturday night at home writing, or reading, or catching up on nerdy shows, that I had failed life. That if someone saw me with a book and a … Read entire article »

I think TOO MUCH
I think i think too much. the very fact that i’m thinking about this, proves it. every day, every moment, my brain is full of oh no’s and what if’s. i worry a lot. i think so much that it tires me out. i become exhausted and can’t do other things. i think so much that my thoughts and words get blocked up in my head and can’t come out onto the computer in writing. i think so much that there’s so much going on and it’s so loud inside, that i tend to be quiet on the outside. i forget to pay attention to what’s going on and miss when i’m supposed to be speaking, or listening, or doing something, and i look stuck up and bitchy. i think … Read entire article »

A quick note about HFCS
saturday morning roomie and I made waffles from scratch from my mother’s yummy recipe. I was saying how long it was taking us to finish the jumbo saver syrup bottle we’d gotten way at the last apartment, and glanced at the ingredients. I gasped and threw the whole thing out! Here’s what I saw: corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, dye, chemicals. I knew it wasn’t natural but I didn’t figure it was completely corn syrup! Fortunatly, I had some real maple syrup lying around i’d been given as a gift and we used that. It doesn’t even taste like the same thing..it took a couple bites to get used to..then it was great. Airy, light, not overwhelming. From now on, that chemical gross isn’t getting into our shopping cart … Read entire article »

wake up, merri! life doesn’t pause, it’s all the time!
I’m constantly having to remind myself that real life is happening all the time, not just when something special/different/exciting/fun/dramatic happens. I tend to forget that the in between time is life too. I get lazy.. I’ve been getting very lazy.. Tuesday I went to work and the gym and was feeling very blah and I went to zumba, and felt really good. All that moving around, and after a break from exercise classes the week before. I was walking home, and roomie called me to come shopping and dinner with him and his friend.. I said well I don’t look so great.. I was just at work and gym and he said that’s fine. I got there and umm… well, I wasn’t lying. I actually had to stand in front … Read entire article »

I need floaties, not anchors
I cant swim, and im not a fan of water, so when I was young and it was hot out and my mother took us to the lake or something, she had me and my siblings wear floaties (or some people call them water wings, I think). Did you ever wear those? I also had an inner tube I loved. Floaties, tubes, water noodles, these all keep you up in the water so you don’t drown. They make the water fun. Well, ive been thinking..and ive realized that what I need in my life are people who are floaties. I’ve met a lot of people so far in life, and I have never been superb at making friends, but there are a lot of anchors out there. People who pull … Read entire article »

Celibacy: Unhealthy??
A thousand times a day, every day, we are confronted with sex. Pictures of it, references to it, people talking about it, people doing it… well not only people, even the other animals are doing it. Sex is a very natural, commonplace thing. I’ve been thinking…we all know sex is a natural and healthy thing, so does that mean that the opposite – lack of sex – is an unnatural and unhealthy thing? I asked my doctor if being celibate is bad for you. She gave a typical, doctor-like answer, ‘that’s a good question. It’s possible. I don’t know.’ I looked online… there was nothing definitive either way. Still, the billion facts showing all the healthy endorphins, improvements to your skin, etc etc from having sex seems to point to … Read entire article »
