When Recipes go Bad – A Non Vegetarian Recipe, Lobster Quesadillas

When Recipes go Bad – A Non Vegetarian Recipe, Lobster Quesadillas

This past week wasn’t the best week for recipes! Monday we had a just ok recipe, Warm Lentil Salad with Grapes, Feta and Mint. You can feel free to try it but we won’t be trying again.  Tuesday I had a recipe I’d previously tried, black eyed peas and tomatoes and sauteed bananas, which we liked again.  Wednesday we tried a horrible recipe that looked like baby diarhea!! coconut lentil soup with warm lentil salad … Read entire article »

Dutch Apple Pancake, Celery Root & Making Time to Cook

Dutch Apple Pancake, Celery Root & Making Time to Cook

Some parts of eating healthy become second nature… always checking the labels of everything, avoiding over processed food, not even thinking of eating some things you’ve ingrained now not to eat. But also sometimes, it takes a bit of effort. Each time I add a new ‘healthy’ it ends up taking longer. Right now, the whole part time vegetarian mixed with using random foods that come in the CSA delivery mixed with not eating sugar … Read entire article »

In Defense of Paula Deen

Now comes the second of the two healthy type things I wanted to speak about. This one is about Paula deen. And I’m probably not going to say what you might think I am going to say. Everyone lately has been upset over the news that Paula Deen has diabetes 2. There were rumors before that she had it, and now it’s been confirmed. It’s not surprising, I agree with you all on that. Paula is known for cooking very indulgent, rich food which has been known to cause health problems such as diabetes. Both types of diabetes run in my own family, so I’m aware of its dangers, although my family members who had it were/are never very careful of their disease. Anyway. People are stating that it is … Read entire article »

Are You Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead?

I’m risking turning this blog into a giant healthiness eating rant, but besides the recipes, I have a couple of related things to talk about, so I’d better just get them out and over with. This post is the first. When roomie and I announced we were going to try and eat more vegetarian, we got suggestions from people. One of those suggestions was to watch a movie Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead. I’d actually heard of this movie before. I looked on Netflix and saw that it’s streaming on there. It’s also free online, for those without Netflix, including here at Hulu. I think that you should go watch it. Do it tonite, or this weekend! The premise of this movie at first seems a little duh and at … Read entire article »

Veggie and Tofu Stir-Fry and Semi-Veggie Week 2

Veggie and Tofu Stir-Fry and Semi-Veggie Week 2

Week two of semi vegetarian eating! Monday I had off for MLK day.  Roomie and I decided to make it a be lazy day. It was also a true vegetarian day, as neither of us usually has meat at breakfast (we made challah French toast yum) and then we tried out Little Star deep dish pizza, famed to be the best pizza in San Francisco. They might be right – their namesake pizza was DELISH! … Read entire article »

Lentils, Squash & Chickpeas – A First Week’s Worth of Vegetarian Dinner Recipes

Lentils, Squash & Chickpeas – A First Week’s Worth of Vegetarian Dinner Recipes

As of when I’m writing this, last night was our first ‘cook vegetarian night.’  It’s not like we don’t have vegetables every day for a side dish, cuz we do. They’re healthy, and we like them. Roomie usually runs to the Safeway grocery store near the gym during the day to pick up random groceries, so I emailed him a list for two dishes, and off he went. Roadblock already, because he couldn’t find some … Read entire article »

Becoming Sometimes Vegetarians?

I’ve been thinking about vegetarianism for quite some time. A couple years. I’ve thought maybe by the time I get old and die, I’ll manage to become a vegetarian. I’ve done a lot of research. I know that it’s healthy to be one (provided, obviously, that you don’t only eat junk food), that people don’t need to eat meat for protein and such. I know it’s better for the environment.  I know that the animals and people who are involved with factory farming and slaughterhouses get severely mistreated. At the same time, I don’t believe that eating meat and animal products is wrong. Although not necessary, animal and dairy products can be healthy parts of a healthy diet. My main reason for objecting is the way the animals are treated. … Read entire article »

I’m still here!! And, what to do when you have a big appetite..

I feel awful that I’ve been missing posts on here for the past week and a half or maybe two weeks. I’m still here!! What happened? A couple of things… First, I was feeling really mopey about the holidays. I get that holiday sadness for some reason every year. I think it’s kinda writer’s blocking me. I’m starting to come out of it a bit, surprisingly… Second, work has been pretty insane. It tires me right out, and then I don’t have the brains left to write anything else! My brain is mummified by the time I get home from work and the gym each day. But I don’t want to lose you readers, make you not even think to check back and see if I’ve written anything… I’m still … Read entire article »

Thanksgiving Roundup

Here is a post celebrating thanksgivings past, plus a few recipes for those still looking for something to put on their tables this Thursday. I had my very first SF Thanksgiving at my first place back in 2006…we ate on the floor. By the next year, 2007, i had it at my best friend’s place, on the year we weren’t roommates. We’d graduated to a fold out table and paper plates. By 2008, I’d moved two more places, and we had it at my house, but I didn’t get to cook anything. I did get to eat it and although i didn’t blog, i do have a couple photos of me eating.  2009 was hectic but I was in another new place. This time, we opted for buying thanksgiving in … Read entire article »

Vegan Creamy Potato Leek Soup and Roasted Garlic on Sourdough!

Vegan Creamy Potato Leek Soup and Roasted Garlic on Sourdough!

Leeks came in our CSA shipment and Roomie and i had no idea what they really were… i did some online research and it seemed like potato leek soup was one of the main things people make with them. i’m not a soup person, and i don’t usually eat potatoes very often at all (usually just as fries!), but eventually i figured why not give it a shot. I found a recipe on a site … Read entire article »
