I won’t link to that recipe. Hungry after the failed recipe, we made a sugar free chocolate cherry cake.
This past week wasn’t the best week for recipes! Monday we had a just ok recipe, Warm Lentil Salad with Grapes, Feta and Mint. You can feel free to try it but we won’t be trying again. Tuesday I had a recipe I’d previously tried, black eyed peas and tomatoes and sauteed bananas, which we liked again. Wednesday we tried a horrible recipe that looked like baby diarhea!! coconut lentil soup with warm lentil salad ew. I won’t link to that recipe. Hungry after the failed recipe, we made a sugar free chocolate cherry cake. Ew! it was even worse than dinner! The only recipes that went the right way this week were the ones I used to make lobster quesadillas. Yes, I know those aren’t vegetarian, but after four veggie meals (including one i ate out thursday before a play), Roomie had found some lobster tails on sale, so we decided to make a yummy last meal before he was relegated to eating icky London food for a while. I used this baked lobster tails recipe to cook the lobster for the quesadillas. They were ones that had already been frozen, so i felt that they needed more. Fresh Maine lobsters over in new england could stand alone on this recipe, as they came out very pretty. The hardest thing is taking the shell off, poor Roomie cut himself doing it! The recipe i found called for sriracha sauce, you know the rooster picture sauce with the green cap. i used to eat a lot of that stuff, but then realized it’s filled with preservatives and high fructose corn syrup and had to give it up forever. or not! I found this recipe for homemade sriracha sauce. it calls for sugar, but in the comments, they say you can replace the sugar with agave syrup, so that’s what i did, as we don’t eat sugar. you have to start it the night before, which found me slicing peppers at midnight. Cutting it and cooking it, it seems very hot. my eyes were so bothered… but eating it, it comes out good. With my sauce and my cooked lobster, i was ready to make lobster quesadillas. This recipe calls for cream cheese, and would probably be good with that, but we forgot it at the store. oh well, it was probably healthier this way! and yummy! There were enough random ingredients leftover to make breakfast bean quesadillas for dinner on sunday as well. For the coming couple weeks, i’ll be cooking for just myself while Roomie is away traveling, so if anyone has any one person recipe suggestions, leave them below. And no, I don’t like making a big meal then eating it every day as leftovers, yuk. that may work for you but not for me. So, my recipe blogging may be petering out for a couple weeks, but don’t worry, if it does, i’ll be back with new things to eat when Roomie returns and I can cook for more than one again.

I came across this new article from twitter, about a proposal to start wet houses here in our city. It’s perhaps not SO unique, because it looks like Seattle is also starting this. SF has a lot of homeless. A lot. We are a sanctuary city, and people come from all over the country to be homeless here. SF theorizes that there are a relatively few number of homeless individuals who take up more of our money in emergency care, arrests and the like than everyone else, and who don’t tend to see the inside of many shelters for preventative care. These people tend to be hardcore alcoholics and because of the dry state of most shelters and programs, will never go. But now, we can open wet shelters and programs, and get these people off the streets. They will either provide the alcohol to the inhabitants directly, or give them vouchers to go buy their own, but it’s much like when parents buy alcohol for their teens’ parties. The known is better than the unknown. If these people can drink, they’ll stay for medical care, counseling, job skills, etc and cost less to the city in the end, and of course, help themselves overall. This is certainly a different kind of thinking…outside the box. These are people who the rules haven’t been working for, so it kind of makes sense that the rules wouldn’t work to help them recover either. I definitely see all the plusses of getting them exposed to things and people that can help, and perhaps building their trust some rather than just taking away what little consolation they have left. But I’m also divided… is it ever right to be feeding someone’s addiction? Can they really become better citizens if they’re ultimately still ill with alcoholism? Won’t it, in the end, kill them, both physically and by its making it difficult for them to function in society? Are we doing them a disservice by being enablers? Hmm… But what’s the alternative? Letting them die on the streets. At least this way, they have a chance. Maybe they’ll be alcoholics either way, but this way, they’ll have more resources. Perhaps things should be taken step by step, and once they receive this help, they’ll be ready to receive help for their addictions as well? What do you think?

Some parts of eating healthy become second nature… always checking the labels of everything, avoiding over processed food, not even thinking of eating some things you’ve ingrained now not to eat. But also sometimes, it takes a bit of effort. Each time I add a new ‘healthy’ it ends up taking longer. Right now, the whole part time vegetarian mixed with using random foods that come in the CSA delivery mixed with not eating sugar mixed with not eating random foods with random chemicals mixed with my roomie and my nut allergies…all add up to a lot of recipe searching for me and a lot of grocery trips for him, then a lot of dishes and cooking for both of us. I’ll sit at the computer, armed with a list of veggies that we have that we need to eat before they go bad, and sift through a billion recipes on a couple sites I know plus google recipe search and try and find some that are quick enough and easy enough and can be changed easily enough for our purposes, then write up grocery lists and send Roomie off on almost a daily shopping trip. He calls walking home with all the groceries his second gym trip. Shopping for him, finding random recipes, is like supermarket sweeps he says, and for me, finding recipes and cooking them is like being a contestant on top chef. However, I’m so glad to be eating less meat and eating healthy. While we haven’t tried any BAD recipes lately, we’ve tried a lot of meh ones. I’m going to link to them, in case they’re your cup of tea. We have the turnip carrot soup – using up CSA turnips, a lot of work to be a little bland. We had sweet chili lime tofu with wok steamed collards and quinoa – a real lot of work, and super flavorful. Roomie found it TOO flavorful for him, I thought it was actually tasty but probably not worth so many steps to me. Oh, and I replaced the sugar in this recipe with splenda. We did have two win recipes. One was celery root. This is something neither of us had tried. We ate it as a side to the leftover soup, and leftover casserole from the previous week. I forgot to take a photo before I cooked it, but celery root looks like an ugly potato. It tastes like it’s got maple syrup in it. I had Roomie stick it in the oven while I was at the gym and it was super easy to finish it up when I got home. The other thing we tried was not a vegetarian dinner, but a sugar free dessert. Or breakfast. The dutch apple pancake takes just minutes to whip up, and we’ve had it twice by the time I’m writing this. The first time, I cooked the apples with splenda, instead of the sugar they asked for, but the second time, we had realized, it didn’t need that. Apples are naturally sweet, so I just used the cinnamon and brown sugar and it came out great. I love the sweet of the apple against the eggy texture of the rest of it. Roomie put maple syrup over his the second time, but he liked it both ways, plain and syruped. This is small, we split it in half and ate the whole thing, and it doesn’t fill you up, but it’s a nice after dinner snack. Sorry for being so late on sharing recipes with you, but between my club Chaos this past weekend and feeling under the weather, and planning the next recipes, I’ve been busy!

In the meantime, head over to www.twitter.com/merrijane at 7pm PST to see what i say, or www.twitter.com/sfplayhouse to see what everyone says. Speaking of tweeting plays, a few weeks ago, I got interviewed about this, and was quoted in a news article. Follow the link to read it (I’m near the end). What do you think; what’s your opinion about live tweeting?

The February Chaos is already upon us – this Saturday Feb 11th at BeatBox in San Francisco!! We have DJ Tristan Jaxx with an opening set by DJ APG, it goes from 10pm till LATE. LATE as in as late as you all can stay dancing…5am, 6am? Maybe! And just $10! Here’s the facebook invite: https://www.facebook.com/events/296770403706049/

I’m craving pilates because I missed it last Wednesday. But I don’t regret missing it because instead, I took a painting class! Yes, my friend Catherine and I got a coupon to go to Wine and Canvas, which I believe is fairly new to our area. Wine and Canvas is a program where they set up classes in bars around the city and teach you to paint one famous painting. Some of them looked kinda hard, but the night that both of us could make it, they were teaching a tree, at Jillians here in San Francisco. I arrived early like it said and got us two seats right up near the teacher. The whole room was set up with blank canvases, palates of paint, buckets of water, and paint brushes. I felt like a little kid at arts and crafts!! While I was waiting for my friend, I learned that the girl on the other side of me was here in SF from Switzerland for a few months for her husband’s work, and that she found people in SF move very fast. Fast?! I asked, shocked. Do you live out in the country back in Switzerland? No, she said, I live in a city. LOL! One major thing I noticed when I moved to SF from the east coast is how SLOWLY things go. People walk at a zombie pace on the sidewalks, they’re flakey and spacey… I guess I’d probably go crazy if I lived in Switzerland then! Anyway, back to painting…Catherine arrived and class began. With a name like Wine and Canvas, we both thought we’d get maybe a free glass of wine. No, drinks were available to purchase from the bar. I’m not a drinker anyway, but I had half a mojito. I usually love those but this one was just so so sweet but without much else taste. Eh. Our room was dimly lit, not the best situation to undertake a masterpiece, but the teacher, and the helpers, who were the husband and wife team running the event, were all super nice. I loved that the teacher seemed to be having so much fun herself! We went step by step, measuring off reference points with our hands and brush handles. You may not be able to tell from photos if you don’t know me in real life, but my hands are about half the size of a normal person’s, so after the first few measurements, I just eyeballed it instead. The teacher had a finished painting up as an example, then painted one with us as we went along to show how the progress should look. It was fun, mixing colors, painting, our ten minute break for the paint to dry so we could draw the tree and flowers on top, but I have to say after a while it got long. It took us THREE HOURS to paint this painting! I NEVER sit still and do just one thing for three hours! That’s longer than a movie!! It didn’t help that I ran through the steps fairly quickly, maybe not the fastest, but definitely not the slowest, and was always waiting for the others to catch up so we could move on to the next step, but I’m used to that in group settings of anything. In the end, we all had finished paintings (except for one empty chair and half done painting – someone bailed in the middle of our class apparently) and held them up for Wine and Canvas to take a group photo. As you can see, although we were all painting the exact same thing, we ended up with different looking paintings. Just goes to show how a person’s personality can shine through. I notice one girl even did an apple tree instead. There are probably a couple kinks for this class to iron out but in the end, it’s a wonderful idea and should do well. They offer it in a few cities, so check it out and see if there’s a class near you. You can end up with a nice painting to hang on your wall or give as a gift, or at least just a fun night doing something out of the ordinary!

I didn’t post up any recipes last monday because we hadn’t tried any new recipes. Yes, we got our quota of vegetarian dinners, but they were made up of takeout and food i’ve already posted about. Can’t be original all of the time! But this past week we were back on with trying things. I’m trying to make sure all of the meals aren’t one type of cuisine, so even though i’m typically not a big italian eater, we made Easy Baked Eggplant Parmesan on monday. We didn’t have panko breadcrumbs, so we used regular ones, and it came out fine anyway. We ate this with whole wheat pasta, and Roomie dumped about a gallon of crushed red peppers into the sauce so that by the end of my dish, i guess we hadn’t mixed it well enough, i felt like i was on Man vs Food! LOL. but overall, ...

LOL. but overall, a pretty tasty and easy thing to make. Tuesday, we had Tomato Bulgur Soup with warm spices, which i’ve already blogged about in the way far back past. Still tasty and filling…bulgur almost tastes like meat. Wednesday, i had no time to eat dinner at home, due to a painting class i’ll be blogging later. Hummus and pita snack instead. Thursday was eggplant again. Why? Roomie had bought two and i’d accidentally cut part of it, thinking we’d have room to parmesan up both, but we didn’t. We tried Baingan Bharta aka Eggplant Curry. I was curious about this one because it had yogurt. We used greek yogurt, and i think that was too thick, they may have been thinking about the soupy kind. We also added two jalepenos instead of one. When it came time to cook it ten minutes covered, it cooked too much. I didn’t even GET to the 5 min uncovered. Maybe my stove cooks things too fast? We would have liked there to be more sauce in this recipe, but that’s probably due to the type of yogurt. I served this over quinoa, but the non sauciness meant it didn’t cover the weird quinoa taste, so couscous would have been better. Overall, it was fast and easy (i had Roomie roast the eggplant before i got home) but only ok, not excellent. The ease of the recipe will probably guarantee it being made again. Last but not least was Friday’s Romanesco Casserole. I had never heard of or seen a Romanesco, but one came in our CSA delivery. They are SO COOL LOOKING!!! wow! Looks like an ALIEN! I had a hard time finding a recipe, but found this one from the UK, although the dish itself tasted french. The measurements are not in US, so I had to google the american counterparts, which was easy. Although kind of quick, this was slightly a lot of work and uses a lot of pans. The two of us were cooking away at the same time in order to make this one come out in a timely manner. I wouldnt cook it myself, because i’d be too hungry. we don’t usually eat bread, but i got a loaf of bread from the store, thinking it’d go well. it did. this casserole came out kind of like a quiche, and the juices were perfect to dip bread into, especially when also dipped in garlic olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Romanesco, it turns out, is a type of cauliflower, but tastes a bit different. i actually prefer it. the casserole was SO filling and rich, i think i ate too much!! After no meat dinners the entire week, I did have some meat saturday and sunday, mostly in the form of fish. Eating out on Saturday, i did notice as i looked at the menu the more meaty dishes didn’t seem as appetizing to me anymore. But on the other hand, i’ve been craving a hamburger. Overall, the part time vegetarian thing is working out well for both of us! We’re mostly at least as not hungry as we are with meat dishes, and we’re eating greater variety. Roomie thinks it may be more expensive though, which may be due to us trying a lot of recipes. hmm. It’s harder for me to pull together a random dish the way i would with meat (cut up meat, side of frozen veggies and a grain), i pretty much need a recipe to keep it filling. Have any of you tried any of these recipes lately? What do you think? Have you been eating less meat lately?

Every Friday I run on the elliptical at the gym. I love it, I have my ipod blasting, my endorphins are up, it’s like I’m at a club. My gym has tvs in the elliptical area, but not on the machines themselves, so we can’t control what we’re watching. More often lately, it’s CNN and that Piers guy is on there interviewing someone. I’m a big multitasker, so while I’m elipticaling, ipoding, and often also checking my phone, I’m also reading the closed captioning on the tv. That’s how I caught an interview with Jane Fonda the other day. ‘Jane, if you were going to be stranded on a deserted island for the rest of your life, which man would you want to come with you?’ Piers asked. ‘I would want one of my girlfriends.’ Jane answered. ‘No, I mean, which man would you like to be your partner there for the rest of your life.’ ‘No one! No man can understand a woman the way another woman can. I’ve gone through everything my whole life with my girlfriends, they’re always there for me, as only other women can be. Women have a special bond that can’t be had with men.’ Or, something to that effect. No, Jane isn’t a lesbian, she means her close female friends, and you know, this is the sentiment I hear echoed time and time again by women of all types, ages, orientations, rich, poor, etc. This whole concept of sisterhood, and how women can understand other women best, and the sense of happiness and kinship they find with being around other women. I have two things to say about this. One, I don’t feel this way, it’s utterly foreign to me. And two, although women SAY this, it’s not really what I observe. Women always seem, to me, to be pretty catty and two-faced to each other. Not all women, and not to all other women, but generally. I am baffled. What I suppose is that they can both at the same time feel this special yay bond AND be catty whatever at the same time. To the women reading this, I really want to know: Do you REALLY feel this whole sisterhood of women thing? Is it something you make up to say but don’t mean? Why don’t I have it? If it exists, why was I skipped over? I do not automatically feel safer around other women, I actually usually feel either threatened or annoyed. I can enjoy being friends or family with specific people who are women, but not women in general. It’s not, oh it’s a woman, yay we’re in some sort of secret women club. And speaking of clubs, or anywhere really, I often have women come up to me in night clubs, or just random places and say something like ‘hi, you’re a girl, I’m a girl too!’ um ya, no not even kidding. I’m always ‘um, ya, we are both women. Hi.’ I have no idea what to say. What should I say? ‘oh wow ya wow we’re both women this is so awesome I always wanted to talk to another female I feel so safe and womanly and sisterly towards you!’ LOL!! Truth be told, I’m most comfortable either alone, or with people I know well, regardless of their gender. Well, duh, I’m an introvert. If I’m going to be around people I don’t know well, or not at all, I’m more comfortable in a group of men vs women. Any kind of men. So, I would be very interested to know, from a reader, if you would be so awesome as to share your feelings about it, why do women have this kinship, how did they get it, and what does it entail? Jane’s answer makes sense to me in one way, that she’d want to be with friends she’s been friends with for years over some guy she just began dating, but not that she stressed that the biggest reason is that they’re female. I’m clueless as to how I missed all this female programming growing up with a mother and a sister, a nana and an aunt. I like them, but not because they’re female, because they’re themselves. What is different about how I think than other women? Hmm.

And I’m probably not going to say what you might think I am going to say. Everyone lately has been upset over the news that Paula Deen has diabetes 2. There were rumors before that she had it, and now it’s been confirmed. It’s not surprising, I agree with you all on that. Paula is known for cooking very indulgent, rich food which has been known to cause health problems such as diabetes. Both types of diabetes run in my own family, so I’m aware of its dangers, although my family members who had it were/are never very careful of their disease. Anyway. People are stating that it is irresponsible of Paula Deen to espouse this type of lifestyle, to cook and enjoy these types of food, and in fact, encourage others to cook and eat these foods, especially now that she knows it can cause a disease. I don’t agree. For one thing, Paula Deen is in charge of Paula Deen. She’s not in charge of you, me, or anyone who watches her show or buys her cookbooks. She’s not forcing ANYONE to consume inordinate amounts of butter, calories, or whatever. The day that we find out she’s walking into people’s houses, cooking, and then jamming this food down people’s throats while they’re tied to chairs is the day I’ll start blaming her for anyone else’s food problems. She’s good at cooking tasty food, and she’s sharing her gift of this with everyone. If you don’t agree, don’t eat it. She’s responsible only to
herself. In fact, she’s a cook, not a doctor, so since when should any of you be taking medical advice from her? It’s pretty common sense that consuming things like fried butter is not particularly healthy. Nowadays, no one wants to take control of their own lives, always blaming it on others. It’s not this stranger woman on tv’s fault, it’s your own. On a second point, it’s not horrible for you to eat the foods that she makes. It’s unhealthy for you to eat the food she makes ALL THE TIME, but in moderation, everyone deserves to eat something that might not be perfectly healthy. You’re more apt to eat healthier overall if you give yourself a break and eat things like this sometimes. She’s showing us foods that we can eat once in a while as a treat. And to be honest, one of these recipes, made from real ingredients, homecooked, even if they contain a billion and one calories, have GOT to be healthier for you than processed chemical junk that people tend to eat all the time. At least this is real food, you can name the ingredients and pronounce them. It will spoil and rot. It’s real stuff you’re putting into your body, real recipes, vs the scary things I see some people eat. The other thing people are upset about is that now that she has admitted to having diabetes 2, she’s teamed up with a drug company to advertise medicine for it. She’s commercializing her disease, which she, according to people’s thinking, is forcing people to get, then prospering from their need for this medicine. It seems kinda silly. There is no Paula Deen plot to make people catch diabetes then take their money. Like she’s been leading up to this all the time? She’s simply taking advantage of what’s happened to her to make some extra money the way celebrities always do. And not only celebs, pretty much everyone. What if she
really believes this drug helps people with her condition? It would make sense she’d stand by it, and why not get paid. I would do that for any product that I believe in. Or, maybe she doesn’t care about how this drug helps her or not. She’s just out to get money. Is that really such a bad thing? How is it hurting anyone? Isn’t that what I do every day when I come into the office? I’m surely not doing it for the love of cubicles. I know that people in the limelight are always going to be hated on. It happens. But if you think about it, there’s really no point. You scrutinizing everyone’s lives is not helping anything. I just wanted to put in my two cents defense of Paula Deen.

One of those suggestions was to watch a movie Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead. I’d actually heard of this movie before. I looked on Netflix and saw that it’s streaming on there. It’s also free online, for those without Netflix, including here at Hulu. I think that you should go watch it. Do it tonite, or this weekend! The premise of this movie at first seems a little duh and at the beginning I thought I might not make it through. There is a guy in Australia who was fat and sick. He had spent all his time working and doing other things, and didn’t take time out for his health. Somehow, I wasn’t paying attention at that point yet, he decides to go on a 3 month juice fast while traveling through the US and making a documentary. It doesn’t go super into the actual fast, but he starts off in NYC for a bit then goes on a road trip through the middle states. Along the way, he has people try his juices. They look good…made with whatever fresh stuff in his juicer. But that’s not the point. It made me very sad, because he was getting better. Not just his weight, but his health, he’s getting off meds, feeling better, thinking clearer, and showing this proof to people as he goes. But most of them don’t care. Oh, they believe him, but they don’t care. Yes, they say, I’m sick and unhealthy but oh well. They tell him they think they’ll die at 40 years old but it’s ok with them. They’d rather die early than put a bit of effort into their health. One couple said they get fast food about 28 days out of the month for their meals. EW. It was pretty shocking. How can people just NOT CARE? It’s their lives! And it’s affecting their loved ones too. It’s like they’re committing slow suicide. One woman in NY believes him and does a ten day juice fast and gets rid of lifelong migranes (well, she switches to eating healthy after the fast, that’s the key, of course). The switch over on the movie happens when a guy our main guy had talked to briefly earlier in the movie and given his contact info wakes up an realizes he’s dying, and contacts Australia guy for help. Then the rest of the movie, we see what happens to the truck driver and his family. This really hit home. I don’t care about the weight loss component, it was the healthy part. Our Australia guy ends up off meds, healthy, exercising, happy, clear minded and better in all aspects of life, not just his body. If you’re eating healthy and exercising, any weight you end up at seems fine. For myself, I think that I eat and exercise pretty well. But I know others who do not. Some members of my family included. Seeing the doctors say these people have such a short life span saddened me. Thankfully, no one I know is as bad as some of these people, all that fast food and such. But they’re sick too often. They can’t do what they want to do. I hope, for all of you out there like that, you will take a look at this movie and maybe be inspired. For yourself and your family and friends. Maybe, do a juice fast for ten days, thirty, ninety like these guys. Get a bit of exercise in. Doesn’t have to be every day. Baby steps, right? Start eating healthier. Eat real food, not chemicals. You’ll feel the difference. Maybe you’ll say you don’t care if you die young, you want to enjoy yourself while you’re here, but really, living like that, sick and hazy minded, it’s not living in a fun way. You can better your life now. I’m not saying be 100% good. But you can make an improvement, even a little. Have any of you seen this movie? What did you think? Did it make you sad, inspired, incredulous?
